Leadership and Business Fundamentals, B.A.S.

The leadership and business fundamentals program is designed for those who have completed or are in their last semester of completing an applied associate degree (A.A.S.) and are looking to complete a bachelor's degree.

Program Overview

The Leadership and Business Fundamentals Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) helps you gain fundamental knowledge of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and organizational dynamics while acquiring leadership and team-building skills. It is a collaborative program between the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Seidman College of Business.

Location & Format

Classes for this major are offered online in accelerated (6-week) formats. Students wishing to take in-person classes may do so on the Allendale and Grand Rapids campuses with some courses also offered in Traverse City.

Formats:

Coursework

Within the major, you can apply 15 credits from your A.A.S. degree or prior learning as a technical focus. You may also transfer all or most of your credits from an accredited institution and earn up to 24 credits from prior learning. These credits will count toward the 120 credits required to graduate. Students must also follow all general education requirements and complete the following major requirements:

  • BAS 301 - Concepts of Learning Integration
  • BAS 491 - Practicum in Applied Science
  • BAS 495 - Senior Seminar in Applied Sciences
  • INT 331 - Person and Profession in a Global Environment

And one of the following:

  • CIS 320 - Visualization of Data and Information
  • DS 202 - Digital Data and Design
  • STA 215 - Introduction to Applied Statistics

You must also complete courses for the Business Fundamentals certificate and the Leadership certificate.

Business Fundamentals helps you develop financial and accounting acumen, as well as the human side of business and organizational operations. You will grow skills in analyzing financial statements and performance, creating operating budgets, managing and motivating others, and analyzing and using marketing information.

Leadership focuses on social change and includes further exploration into organizational theory, team building, design thinking, and grant writing. You will develop professional skills that employers are looking for such as team building and ethics.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted, students need to meet Grand Valley State University’s minimum requirements for transfer student admissions and have completed or be in their last semester of an associate of applied science degree, an associate of general studies, an associate of applied arts and science degree, an associate in business degree, or similar technical applied degrees.
